New Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli handed debuts to striker Robbie Ure and defender Stephen Welsh in his first squad selection. During the match against Slovenia at the Stozice Arena, attention turned to an unusual detail: Ure's shirt read "Robbie Ure" in full rather than just his surname, as is customary in football.
The 22-year-old, who joined Spanish club Sevilla from Swedish side IK Sirius over the summer, explained his reasoning afterwards. He said people usually call him "Robbie Ure" rather than just "Ure," and that the letters U-R-E alone looked too small on the shirt. He follows the same practice at club level.
Debut and match action
Ure, a former Rangers youth player, wore the number 10 shirt and played alongside Oli McBurnie up front. Pocognoli opted for an aggressive, energetic approach that demands a lot from his strikers; Ure was replaced by Kieron Bowie after 67 minutes.
Scotland's first-half performance was poor, with Ure's low, long-range effort that struck the post providing the only real moment of promise. After the break, Scotland dominated following a tactical tweak that saw McBurnie move further left to combine with Andy Robertson and Billy Gilmour.
