Why does a dog tilt its head while listening to a person?
Hungarian researchers have studied why dogs often tilt their heads while listening to humans. It turns out there may be several reasons, ranging from processing information to seeing and hearing better.
Many dog owners are familiar with the scene: a person speaks, and the dog suddenly tilts its head to one side, as if listening especially carefully. Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest looked into this behaviour, publishing their findings in the journal "Animal Cognition".
Familiar words trigger the reaction
The study found that dogs tilt their heads more often when they hear words already familiar to them and try to process what they've heard. Study author Andrea Sommese suggests the movement may be linked to concentration and an attempt to recall known information.
A better view of the face
Dog behaviour researcher Stanley Coren offers another explanation: a dog's own snout partially blocks its view of the lower part of a person's face. By tilting its head sideways, the animal gets a better angle to see the owner's lips and facial expressions, which can help it understand what is being said.
Hearing and emotions may also play a role
Dogs have excellent hearing, and changing head position can help them pinpoint more precisely where a particular sound is coming from. Research also suggests dogs can recognise different human emotional states, such as joy, anger or sadness, leading some experts to believe head tilting may also relate to a desire to better observe the owner's mood.
Overall, scientists note there isn't one single reason why all dogs do this. The behaviour is likely connected both to focusing attention and processing sound, and to a desire to see and better understand the human face.
