Grave Tourism in Latvia: Interest Exists, but It's Not 'Dark Tourism'
Interest in visiting cemeteries and burial sites is growing in Latvia, but experts say this phenomenon is not considered dark tourism, which globally involves visiting places associated with tragic historical events.
Worldwide, dark tourism has become increasingly popular over the past decades. Tourists visit places where the darkest historical events took place, such as cliffside coffin cemeteries in Indonesia, catacombs beneath Paris streets, and remnants of concentration camps. These visitors are willing to pay significant amounts to explore these often morbid sites. Travel routes also frequently include the resting places of celebrities.
Latvia has seen a similar interest in such tourism, but local experts emphasize that it does not qualify as dark tourism. Instead, Latvian cemeteries and memorial sites are viewed more as historical heritage than as sensational attractions. This distinction gives the local phenomena a unique character.
