Karl Stefanovic says his podcast is ‘about freedom of speech’ after Nine announces his immediate departure
Australian TV host Karl Stefanovic leaves Nine immediately after his independent podcast featured an interview with far-right activist Tommy Robinson, sparking controversy.

Karl Stefanovic, the long-time host of Australia's 'Today' show, has left Nine with immediate effect. The network and Stefanovic agreed it was no longer possible for him to both host the show and run his independent podcast, following days of controversy over his interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
In a YouTube video, Stefanovic declared he was “free, truly independent” and said his podcast is about freedom of speech. He thanked his audience for 21 years, noting he didn't get to say goodbye on air. The video ends with him jumping and clapping his feet.
Nine CEO Matt Stanton told staff in an email that after more than 20 years, it was “the right time for Karl to move on.” Stanton acknowledged the change is significant but necessary. Originally, Stefanovic was set to leave 'Today' at the end of the year, but the recent events accelerated his exit.
The interview with Robinson, known for his far-right activism, is believed to be the trigger for the early departure.
