During the autumn harvest season, households see a surge in drosophila, or fruit flies, sometimes locally called "sourness flies." These tiny insects turn out to share a striking genetic similarity with humans.

Every autumn, as the harvest season reaches its peak, small fast-flying insects known as fruit flies — or drosophila — begin appearing in kitchens and gardens across Latvia. In some areas they are colloquially called "sourness flies," a nickname that comes from their attraction to ripening and slightly fermenting fruit and vegetables.
The seasonal surge in their numbers is not a coincidence. It coincides with the period when much of the year's harvest is gathered, leaving households with larger quantities of ripe produce — ideal conditions for the insects to multiply.
Although fruit flies are tiny and may seem to have little to do with humans, they hold a special place in science. It turns out that humans share a striking genetic similarity with these small insects — our genetic code overlaps significantly with the drosophila genome. Because of this, fruit flies have been used for decades as a model organism in scientific research, helping researchers better understand biological processes that also occur in the human body.
So the small, seemingly harmless insect that shows up near the fruit bowl each autumn is, in fact, one of science's most valuable helpers. Its yearly reappearance is a reminder not only of harvest season, but also of an unexpected genetic connection between people and a creature that might otherwise seem entirely unrelated to us.
