Conservative commentator Katie Zacharia has been offered the job of White House press secretary, a White House official confirmed to the BBC. The press secretary is the chief spokesperson of the US president's administration and the main contact with the media. If she takes the post, Zacharia would become the sixth chief spokesperson of Donald Trump's two terms in office.
Who is Zacharia
She currently works as a communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Trump's media business and the Truth Social platform. According to her LinkedIn profile, she has been there since June. Zacharia often appears as a guest on conservative media programmes. In February and March this year she had a brief spell as a spokesperson at the US Department of Homeland Security.
The BBC has asked Zacharia for comment.
The previous press secretary
Karoline Leavitt, the former White House press secretary, left the post in August. She has reportedly taken a job with Fox News, the US television news channel.
What the job involves
The role goes well beyond standing at the briefing room podium. The press secretary manages difficult relationships with the press, coordinates with other parts of the White House and advises the president on dealing with the media. The post-holder also oversees an office that handles a large number of inquiries and requests every day.
