Katrīna Ozola shines in Polish league debut
Latvian player Katrīna Ozola scored 17 points on her debut in the Polish women's basketball championship, but her team squandered a lead in the final quarter and lost.
The first round of Poland's women's basketball championship began on Saturday, 26 September, and Latvian player Katrīna Ozola made an impressive first appearance for her new club. In a home game in Bydgoszcz against Energa Torun, she scored 17 points, one of the standout debut performances of the round.
Artego Bydgoszcz, coached by Krzysztof Szewczyk, held the lead for three quarters but lost control in the final ten minutes, falling to the visitors 62:69 at home. Torun claimed their first win of the season, while Bydgoszcz suffered their first defeat.
Ozola played 33 minutes and 26 seconds, converting three of four two-point attempts, three of eight three-pointers and two of five free throws. The tall forward grabbed seven rebounds, recorded one steal and posted the game's best efficiency rating of 16.
In another Saturday match, Sleza Wroclaw defeated Jorge Aragonés's Wisla Krakow 86:53 on the road. The decisive moment came in the third quarter, when Sleza outscored their opponents 30:11. Latvian player Digna Strautmane played 14 minutes and 47 seconds, scoring three points on one made three-pointer out of three attempts. She also added five rebounds, one assist and two blocked shots.
Latvians in Lithuania too
In Lithuania's women's basketball league, Šiauliai/Vilmers won their second warm-up match against Rokiškis 1499 with a score of 101:73. Latvian player Madara Šmite scored 15 points in that game.
