Bikers gather near Kaunas mosque during prayers, pig's head displayed

On the afternoon of September 11, a large gathering of motorcyclists formed near the mosque in Kaunas, coinciding with Muslim Friday prayers. According to eyewitnesses, members of several motorcycle clubs from the Kaunas region began assembling in a nearby park around 12:30 p.m., with roughly a hundred people taking part.

Noise and provocation

The bikers deliberately revved their engines loudly and played music at high volume precisely while prayers were underway inside the mosque. Participants also chanted patriotic slogans. Tensions escalated further when a pig's head was brought near the mosque during the prayers — one participant lifted it up and turned it toward the worshippers. The moment was captured on video.

Community reaction

The behavior angered members of the Muslim community who had come for Friday prayers. A community representative told a local outlet that the situation was shocking, since people come to the site simply to pray peacefully, and that such disturbances also affect nearby educational institutions and local residents. She added that incidents near religious gathering places have become more frequent recently, though this particular gathering stood out for its scale.

Witnesses say that despite the tension, no serious incidents occurred, and several police units were present near the mosque.

Context

Pork and pork products are forbidden under Islamic religious law, meaning the appearance of a pig's head during prayers can be seen as a deliberately offensive provocation. The Kaunas mosque is the only brick-built mosque in Lithuania and a state-protected cultural heritage site of national significance, built between 1930 and 1932 on the site of a former cemetery.
