Bayern Munich of Germany drew 2-2 at home with Arsenal, the Premier League champions from London, in the Champions League, Europe's top club football competition. The central figure was Bayern forward and England captain Harry Kane, who scored, set up another goal and became only the second player in the tournament's history to score in 10 consecutive matches. It strengthens his position in the race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, football's most prestigious individual award.

How the match unfolded

Around the 25-minute mark, as Bayern prepared to take a goal-kick, Kane took it himself and sent the ball far up the pitch with a pass of roughly 80 yards. The move almost ended with Bayern taking the lead. Arsenal then went ahead through Eberechi Eze, before Kane bent a pass around Jurrien Timber for Alphonso Davies to equalise. Midway through the second half Kane put Bayern in front from the penalty spot, his 16th career goal against Arsenal. Declan Rice later struck to level the match.

Record and award

Kane is the second player in Champions League history, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to score in 10 straight games. Ronaldo did it in 11 consecutive matches for Real Madrid between June 2017 and April 2018. Since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, Kane has scored 156 goals in 158 appearances.

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha said coach Vincent Kompany has given Kane a level of trust he has probably not had before, and that his freedom on the pitch benefits the team. Rice called Kane the clear winner of the award.

Kane, 33, could become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001. Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Paris St-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele are also among the favourites. The winner will be announced on Monday in London after a vote by 100 journalists. Kane said voting closed a long time ago and all he can do is wait.
