Milestone Moment for O'Connor with Glasgow Gold
Northern Ireland's Kate O'Connor won the heptathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games, the country's first athletics gold since 1986, after a resilient performance in challenging rainy conditions.
Kate O'Connor, 25, from Newry, achieved her biggest career milestone by winning the heptathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday. She accumulated 6,569 points, finishing 291 points ahead of England's Jade O'Dowda. The victory marks Northern Ireland's first gold medal at the Games and its first in athletics since 1986.
O'Connor had previously won silver at the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships and bronze at the European Indoor Championships, but she was determined to top the podium. "I'm not turning up to championships to come second and third, I want to be top," she had stated before the event.
The competition was not straightforward. Heavy rain on Tuesday evening hampered her performance in the shot put, where she managed only 12.85m, far below her usual standard. However, she showed resilience by winning her 200m heat and then delivering strong performances on the final day: a long jump of 6.37m, a season's best in javelin with 52.85m, and a comfortable 800m victory in 2:10.46.
Reflecting on her win, O'Connor told BBC Sport NI: "It's pretty special. It's all still a bit of a whirlwind. The last two days were really tough but I enjoyed today. I showed the competitive side of me which I had to do because people were nipping at my heels right until the very end."
The pressure increased after defending champion Katerina Johnson-Thompson withdrew, but O'Connor rose to the occasion. She admitted she had to adjust her expectations after a tough first day: "It's not always about getting huge big scores but competing and getting the best out of yourself with the elements and challenges." Now with the gold medal around her neck, she is looking forward to the podium ceremony on Thursday evening.
