US singer Kelly Clarkson has publicly described an unpleasant experience at a store in New York on the social media platform X. She called it her "Pretty Woman moment", a reference to a scene in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, in which a shop refuses to show Julia Roberts' character more expensive items, saying she would not be able to afford them.

The store's explanation

After the singer's post, store representatives tried to explain the situation. They said the item Clarkson had asked about was not for sale and was part of the store's interior decor. They also suggested that her remarks implied she did not support small businesses.

Clarkson's response

The explanation did not satisfy the singer. She ironically recounted how the conversation went: she pointed to a price tag and asked whether the singing bird was for sale. According to her, she received a disapproving look and was told in a condescending tone that it was for sale but cost 15,000 dollars, so if she wanted, the staff member could find her something similar.

Clarkson stressed that she clearly supports small businesses, since she had been in the store trying to buy the item. She ended her comment by saying the shop is very nice, but that, unfortunately, its staff are not.
