Norbert Wiener: the overlooked founder of cybernetics and AI's early warning voice

A forgotten pioneer
Most accounts of AI's origins focus on Alan Turing, John von Neumann, and the Dartmouth group. Norbert Wiener, who founded cybernetics in the 1940s, is often left in the background. Yet his ideas indirectly led to today's large language models, and his moral objections might make him reluctant to claim them.
Wiener was born on November 26, 1894, in Missouri to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. His father Leo Wiener, a strict professor of Slavic languages of Lithuanian descent, tried to shape him in his own image. The young prodigy read before age four, finished high school at 11, earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics at 14, and completed a PhD at Harvard at 18. MIT later made him one of its youngest professors.
The scientific foundations of cybernetics were laid in a seminal article in 1943, and in 1948 Wiener published "Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine." This discipline studied control and information transmission across humans, animals, and machines, drawing parallels between brains and computational systems. During World War II, Wiener worked on an anti-aircraft system that adapted in real time and learned from errors — one of the earliest forms of machine learning.
Influence and warnings
The Macy Conferences on Cybernetics (1946–1953) brought together leading figures such as von Neumann and Claude Shannon. One of their founders, J.C.R. Licklider, later headed DARPA and played a major role in the internet's development. At MIT, Wiener supervised Walter Pitts, whose 1940s work laid the groundwork for the first neural network model. This line of research, known as connectionism, is central to modern systems like ChatGPT.
Wiener also warned early about the dangers of technology. He refused to join the Manhattan Project. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he published an open letter saying he would no longer share research that could be used for weapons of mass destruction, a stance supported by Albert Einstein. As early as 1948, Wiener foresaw a fully automated society that could either free humanity from work or lead to mass unemployment. Suspected of left-wing sympathies by US authorities, he saw cybernetics as a political field tied to the fear of machines replacing workers. He argued that robots would only replace humans if people were treated inhumanely, stripped of what makes them human. Though the term "cybernetics" has faded, Wiener's concerns remain relevant as companies cite AI to justify mass layoffs.
