Kyiv finally lifts air-raid alert that lasted over nine hours
An air-raid alert in Kyiv lasted nine hours and ten minutes after a massive Russian drone attack, one of the longest since the start of the full-scale war. Several residents were hurt and a residential building, a data center and other sites were damaged.
Kyiv lifted its air-raid alert in the early hours of Monday, September 28, after it had remained in force continuously for nine hours and ten minutes. The alert was declared on Sunday, September 27, at 15:46 and was only cancelled just before 1 a.m. the following day. The unusually long alert was caused by a large-scale Russian strike-drone attack on the capital, according to the "Kyiv Digital" platform, which tracks air-raid alerts.
Records and statistics
This was not the longest alert on record. Last year, from 22:55 on November 28 until 09:27 the next morning, an alert lasted 10 hours and 32 minutes. The record for the most alerts declared in a single day — 13 — was set on August 27. The cumulative duration of air-raid alerts in Kyiv since the start of the full-scale invasion has now reached 2,979 hours and 38 minutes.
Damage and casualties
During Sunday's attack, one drone struck a 16-story residential building in the Podilskyi district, hitting around the seventh floor; people were injured. In the Solomianskyi district, a man was killed in the overnight strike and fires broke out in two non-residential buildings. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, three people were injured, including two 16-year-old children.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces struck a data center in Kyiv twice on Sunday morning. During the day, a drone hit a four-story administrative building in the Holosiivskyi district, and later another drone struck a high-rise in the Darnytskyi district, injuring a woman. Zelensky added that the attacks damaged a building used as the residence of the Saudi Arabian ambassador, as well as two kindergartens, two schools, warehouses and communication facilities. In the Dniprovskyi district, two people were injured Sunday evening when a drone struck an open area. In total, the number of people injured across the city over the course of the day rose to nine.
