Kyiv clinic director wounded in shooting; suspect soldier’s possible motive tied to wife’s death
A soldier suspected of attempting to murder the director of a private medical center in Kyiv may have been driven by revenge after his wife died following treatment there. Police detained him several days after the shooting.
Ukrainian prosecutors have provided new details about the September 3 shooting in Kyiv’s Sviatoshyn district, in which the director of a private medical center was seriously wounded. According to investigators, the attacker is a serviceman who had previously left his military unit without permission. Preliminary findings suggest that the man’s wife died after treatment at the clinic, which could have been the motive for the attack.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. The suspect had been waiting for the victim near the medical facility. When the director parked his car and stepped out, the attacker approached and fired at least 23 shots at his head before fleeing. The victim, aged 71, was taken to hospital with severe injuries and remains in serious condition.
The suspect, a military serviceman, has been formally notified of suspicion of attempted premeditated murder under Part 2 of Article 15 and Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. During searches at his place of residence, law enforcement found a firearm, clothing, and a laptop containing information about the victim and his children. Investigators are asking the court to place the suspect in pretrial detention. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
Police detained the attacker on September 8. Earlier reports indicated that more than 20 shots had been fired at the director.
