Kyiv clinic shooting: serviceman detained; motive may be linked to wife’s death after treatment
A serviceman has been detained in Kyiv over an attack on the director of a private medical centre on 3 September. Investigators say the man’s wife died after being treated at the clinic, and this could have been the motive.
Prosecutors in Kyiv have said that a man detained over a shooting is a serviceman who had previously left his military unit without permission. He is suspected of attempting to kill the director of a private medical centre.
The attack happened on 3 September at about 10 a.m. in the Sviatoshyn district. According to investigators, the suspect waited for the victim near the clinic. When the director parked his car and got out, the attacker approached him and fired at least 23 shots at his head from a firearm, then fled.
A possible motive, investigators believe, was the death of the suspect’s wife after she had undergone treatment at the same medical centre. The victim sustained severe injuries and was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as serious.
The suspect has been notified of suspicion of attempted premeditated murder. During searches at his home, police found a firearm, clothing, and a laptop containing materials with information about the victim and his children. Authorities are now deciding whether to place the suspect in custody. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Earlier, police reported that on the morning of 3 September a man fired more than 20 shots at the 71-year-old director of the private clinic. The suspect was detained on 8 September.
