Kyiv air raid alert lasting over nine hours finally lifted

An air raid alert in Kyiv that sounded continuously for nine hours and ten minutes was finally called off in the early hours of Monday, September 28. The alert had been declared on Sunday, September 27, at 15:46 and was lifted only at 00:56 on Monday. The prolonged alert was caused by a massive wave of Russian attack drones targeting the Ukrainian capital.

According to available records, this was not the longest continuous air raid alert Kyiv has experienced since the start of the full-scale invasion — last year, on November 28, an alert lasted 10 hours and 32 minutes. Separately, the highest number of individual alerts declared in the capital within a single day was recorded on August 27, when sirens sounded 13 times. The cumulative duration of air raid alerts in Kyiv since the war began has now reached 2,979 hours and 38 minutes.

Consequences of the attack

Throughout Sunday, Russian forces carried out a massive drone strike on Kyiv. One drone hit a 16-story residential building on the seventh floor in the Podilskyi district, causing casualties. In the Solomianskyi district, a man was killed in the overnight drone attack, and fires broke out in two non-residential buildings. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, three people were injured, including two 16-year-old children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces struck a data center in Kyiv twice on Sunday morning. During the day, a drone hit a four-story administrative building in the Holosiivskyi district, and later a drone struck a multi-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district, injuring a woman.

Zelensky also reported that the attacks damaged a building used as the residence of the Saudi Arabian ambassador, as well as two kindergartens, two schools, warehouses and communication facilities. In the Dniprovskyi district, two people were injured Sunday evening when a drone struck an open area. Overall, the number of people injured in Kyiv during the day rose to nine.
