Kyiv cleanup operations have been completed after Russia's overnight missile attack, with nine people killed and 33 injured, including four children.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has announced the completion of cleanup operations in Kyiv following a Russian attack. The final death toll stands at nine people, while 33 others were injured, including four children. In total, rescuers managed to save 105 people, the service said. More than 200 rescue workers and dozens of pieces of equipment took part in the response, with the official figures putting the number at 206 personnel and 42 units of equipment.
The attack on Kyiv took place overnight from 31 July to 1 August, when Russian forces launched a large-scale ballistic missile strike against the capital and the surrounding Kyiv Oblast. The assault caused multiple fires and widespread destruction in five districts of the city. Initial reports had already pointed to nine dead and more than 30 injured, and the emergency service has now confirmed the exact casualty numbers after completing all search and rescue efforts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that Ukraine's air defense intercepted only one of 27 Russian ballistic missiles. He explained the low interception rate by the shortage of Patriot interceptors and called on international partners to provide additional anti-ballistic missile defense systems. The president's statement underscores the challenges facing Ukraine's air defense in countering large-scale ballistic attacks.
