Kyiv police launch operation to catch armed suspect after shooting
Gunfire broke out in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district, leaving one person injured, prompting police to launch a special operation to detain an armed suspect. A day earlier, a separate shootout occurred between Ukraine's security service and military intelligence officers in another part of the city.
Police in Kyiv received a report of gunfire in the city's Sviatoshynskyi district on the morning of September 3. One person was injured in the incident and is receiving medical care. Authorities said a special operation is now underway to detain an armed suspect.
Earlier clash between security agencies
The shooting followed a separate incident the day before, when officers from Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) exchanged gunfire in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. The SBU said its officers had been conducting "urgent investigative actions" tied to a probe into an alleged terrorist attack organized by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). According to the agency, a group of individuals attacked SBU officers during the search in an apparent attempt to disrupt the investigation.
That search was connected to the detention of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a unit fighting on Ukraine's side. Kaplunov is suspected of working for the FSB and of plotting to assassinate a leader of the Russian opposition movement who was expected to travel to Kyiv.
