Kristaps Zīle is regarded as one of the pioneers of Latvian kickboxing — he was among the first Latvian fighters to compete abroad at a time when such opportunities were rare for Latvian athletes.
In an interview with Apollo.lv, Zīle revealed that his path in combat sports has not been easy. "I've been through a very bitter experience," he said, describing his time in kickboxing.
Competing while working a physical job
Even during periods when Zīle continued representing Latvia in international competitions, he simultaneously had to work in construction to support himself. Alongside his athletic career and physically demanding job, he also raised a son, juggling the roles of athlete, worker and father at the same time.
Persistence despite the hardship
Despite the difficult daily routine, Zīle never gave up training and kept fighting, carrying the name of Latvia abroad at a time when Latvian kickboxing was still establishing its place on the international combat sports scene. In the conversation with Apollo.lv, the athlete shared his personal experience, revealing how much effort and sacrifice it took to keep developing his sporting career while also providing for his family.
