Riga's Kimmel Quarter, at 2 Bruņinieku Street, opened last summer. Within a few hundred square metres, it evokes the atmosphere of several European cities. From a small hill, visitors can enjoy quality drinks and grilled dishes with views over the area, reminiscent of Berlin or a Scandinavian capital. Down in a depression, the mood shifts to something like a simple beer garden in a German town, where music often plays and children run around playing tag.

The quarter's newest addition is Cheff Mezze, a restaurant that brings a distinctly Italian vibe to the old walls. Its menu is short but well thought out, offering flavours that the team describes as refined street food. Though that might sound pretentious, the venue delivers the satisfying fullness expected from fast-casual dining, and it adds excellent taste to the mix.

The terrace is tucked in a sheltered spot, blocking views of the rest of the quarter. That makes it easier to imagine having a quick, pleasurable meal somewhere much warmer.
