Kim 'part of history' after carding historic 59

Michael Kim is thrilled to be "part of the history books" after a superb 12-under-par round of 59 at the 3M Open in Minnesota. The American drained a 24-foot birdie putt at the final hole to post just the 16th sub-60 round ever on the US PGA Tour.

Kim birdied the last four holes at TPC Twin Cities course, finishing his second round with 12 birdies and no bogeys. He leads by three shots over compatriot Ben Kohles. The 33-year-old is the 15th golfer to reach the magic number of 59 on the US tour, following Jim Furyk's record 58 in 2016.

"I remember thinking on 18 that you have to go for it – 60 or 61 doesn't make much difference," said Kim, whose previous best round was a 62. "To shoot 59 today was pretty cool and feels like I'm part of the history books."

Kim's round included five straight birdies from holes 3 to 7, starting with an 11-foot putt. He added back-to-back birdies at 9 and 10, another at 12, then closed with birdies from 12, 13, and 17 feet on the final three holes.

"I made a really nice birdie putt on 16 with a lot of break," Kim said. "On 17 and 18, there's a lot of water, and I told myself this is the moment to go for it and hit some really good shots."
