China becomes Rwanda's top export market
In the first quarter of 2026, China became Rwanda's leading export destination, taking 26% of total exports compared with under 5% a year earlier, after China removed tariffs on nearly all Rwandan goods. However, real market access now hinges on meeting sanitary standards rather than tariff levels.
Rwanda's trade relationship with China has shifted dramatically, with China becoming the country's top export destination in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 26% of total Rwandan exports — up from less than 5% just a year before.
Tariff removal sparks the shift
The change is largely attributed to China's decision to eliminate tariffs on almost all products originating from Rwanda. This policy shift opened the door for Rwandan exporters to a market that was previously far less accessible.
Sanitary standards now the real barrier
Despite the tariff-free access, exporters on the ground report that entering China's market of 1.4 billion consumers depends less on tariff rates and more on meeting the country's sanitary requirements. Rwandan producers now face the task of adapting their goods and processes to comply with these standards in order to maintain and grow their foothold in the Chinese market.
