Chinese Analysts Say Beijing Has Leverage to Resist Trump's Economic Threats Over Iran

Chinese analysts believe Beijing can withstand economic threats from the Trump administration linked to China's ties with Iran. They point to China's control over critical mineral supplies and its ample oil resources as key sources of resilience.

The Trump administration has directed economic threats at China over its relationship with Iran, but according to Chinese analysts cited by The New York Times, Beijing believes it has the tools needed to withstand this pressure.

One key factor analysts point to is China's dominant position in the supply of critical minerals that American industry and technology sectors depend on. This control, they argue, gives Beijing the ability to respond to Washington's pressure by restricting or complicating exports of these materials.

The second factor concerns Iran directly. China is one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil, yet analysts say the country holds sufficient oil reserves and alternative supply options to absorb the loss of Iranian crude if that trade were disrupted.

Together, these two elements — influence over the critical minerals market and flexibility in oil supply — underpin Beijing's confidence that it can stand firm against American economic pressure without being forced to change its policy toward Iran.

How the broader economic standoff between the United States and China over Iran will unfold remains uncertain. Still, the confidence expressed by Chinese analysts suggests Beijing has no immediate plans to scale back its economic ties with Tehran in response to threats from Washington.
