Paphos District Court in Cyprus on Friday morning fined a British father €3,000 (£2,500) over the death of his two-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor window at a hotel on 12 July. Joshua Foster, 37, from Essex, had admitted causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act.

The fall happened at the five-star King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas, near Paphos. The boy dropped nearly 40ft (12.1m). It was the first day of the family's holiday.

What the court heard

The court had previously been told that Foster believed the window was closed. He placed his son on the sill to show him the view of a waterpark, then "lost control" of the child.

Foster is an auditor. He had travelled to Cyprus with his wife, their two children and his in-laws, arriving in the early hours of the day of the incident. The family spent the day on various activities, including a visit to the pool, and then got ready for dinner.

At about 18:00, Foster, his father-in-law and the boy walked towards an elevator. Foster's lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, told the court that his client was in a "good mood" and was playing with his son.

After the sentencing, Foster spoke to reporters: "Thank you for the support. I'm looking forward to going home and being with my wife and daughter."
