Cherry harvest begins: growers hope for sunny weather to protect quality

The cherry harvest season has begun in Latvia, with consumers eager to enjoy the summer fruit. However, growers are hoping for sunny days, as prolonged rain can cause ripe cherries to crack, potentially damaging part of the crop.

At the Dobeles Horticulture Institute, which houses the largest collection of cherry varieties in Latvia, hundreds of different kinds are currently ripening. Meanwhile, scientists continue their work on developing new cherry varieties.
