New book chronicles life of director Kārlis Auškāps
Theatre scholar Margarita Zieda has published "Dzīvot no tā, kā nav" ("Living on What Isn't There"), a biography of actor and director Kārlis Auškāps built largely on people's personal memories of him.

Theatre scholar Margarita Zieda has released a new book, "Dzīvot no tā, kā nav," dedicated to the life of actor and director Kārlis Auškāps.
The author has described the book's genre as a "living theatre history," noting that a central place in the work is given to the personal recollections of various people who knew Auškāps.
More than dry facts
Speaking on Latvian Radio's programme "Kultūras rondo," Zieda explained that Auškāps' personality and contribution to theatre are too multifaceted to be captured through aesthetic categories or dry historical facts alone. The goal, she said, was to create a living account of his life grounded in human memory rather than a conventional historical record.
