Klay Thompson signs with Miami Heat
36-year-old Klay Thompson became a free agent after mutually parting ways with the Dallas Mavericks and has joined the Miami Heat. He said the team's demanding atmosphere and the chance to compete for titles again drew him to Miami.
Veteran guard Klay Thompson agreed with the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday to mutually terminate his contract, walking away from the remaining ten million dollars in order to pursue a move elsewhere. He chose to sign with the Miami Heat, hoping to help the team fight for top honors this coming season.
Thompson said he was drawn to the Heat because of the high expectations the organization places on its players. He explained that the feeling of winning has become something he can't live without, and that the desire to compete for championships at the highest level was the main reason behind the move.
Career and achievements
Thompson's NBA career so far has included only two teams — the Golden State Warriors, where as one of the team's leaders he won four championships, and most recently the Dallas Mavericks. Miami will now become his third NBA stop.
The Heat had already strengthened their roster this offseason by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Thompson is expected to provide perimeter shooting threat. Last season he shot 38.3 percent from three-point range, and he currently ranks fourth in NBA history for made three-pointers, trailing Stephen Curry, James Harden and Ray Allen. He needs 74 more three-pointers to pass Allen.
Thompson expressed confidence that the upcoming season will be a comeback year for him, saying he wants to show he can still help his team win consistently. He added that he is eager to get to work with his new team and called joining Miami both an incredible feeling and an honor.
