The beavers' arrival is creating practical difficulties for local Inuit communities, whose way of life is tied to hunting and fishing. The animals have proven adept at evading hunters' efforts to catch them, allowing them to establish themselves and multiply in territories where they were once absent.
Reshaping the environment
Beavers are known as powerful ecosystem engineers, building dams that alter the natural flow of waterways. Such changes affect vegetation, water temperature and the habitats of other species. Arctic ecosystems in Canada, which have remained relatively stable for centuries because of the cold climate, are now undergoing new and unpredictable shifts as a result of the beavers' presence.
