KNAB requests charges against former VARAM state secretary over disclosure of restricted information
Latvia's anti-corruption bureau KNAB has asked prosecutors to launch criminal proceedings against Edvīns Balševics, former state secretary of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, over alleged disclosure of restricted-access information. Three possible instances are cited.
The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) on Wednesday, September 2, asked the prosecutor's office responsible for investigating crimes committed within state institutions to open criminal proceedings against Edvīns Balševics, the former state secretary of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM).
According to the LETA news agency, KNAB believes there are three possible cases in which the former official may have disclosed information subject to restricted access.
KNAB is tasked with identifying and preventing corruption risks within public administration, including cases where officials act contrary to established procedures for handling sensitive information. The request has been submitted to the prosecutor's office, which will now decide on further action in the case.
