What robot vacuums still can't do: the hidden downsides
Robot vacuums save time but can't fully replace human cleaning, struggling with obstacles, corners and varied floor types. Extra features like self-emptying and mopping significantly raise the price.
Robot vacuum cleaners promise to take chores off your hands, but tech outlet Engadget outlines several limitations buyers should weigh before ditching their upright vacuum.
Floors need prepping first
Unlike a human, a robot vacuum can't move objects out of its way since most models lack arms. Chairs, toys, trailing charging cables or pet messes can all disrupt its route. Budget models rely on bump sensors and may repeatedly collide with the same obstacle, while pricier ones use infrared sensors, LiDAR and AI cameras for better navigation. Even advanced models can still get stuck when cables tangle around brushes or wheels, or when socks and lightweight rugs get sucked in.
Some floors are tougher than others
Robot vacuums handle crumbs on hardwood floors well, but pulling deep-set dirt out of thick carpet is harder than with a traditional vacuum's powered floorhead. Transitions between surfaces — tile, wood, carpet, raised rug edges — can cause the robot to get stuck, and its round shape makes tight corners difficult to reach. Current models also can't tackle stairs or upholstery, though companies like Roborock have shown stair-climbing prototypes not yet on sale.
Extra features raise the cost
Prices climb sharply with added features such as self-emptying docks, obstacle detection and mopping. Basic models cost under $100, while the iRobot Roomba 105 Combo, which mops and empties itself, runs around $300. At the premium end, the Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete — offering automatic hot-water mop washing and a retractable sensor for low furniture — costs about $1,700.
Maintenance is still on you
Without a self-emptying dock, owners must regularly empty the small onboard dustbin and clean or replace brushes and filters. Mopping models also require refilling water tanks and cleaning dirty pads. Overall, even with a robot vacuum, users will likely still need a traditional vacuum and mop for thorough, occasional cleaning.
