Codina explains reasons for joining West Ham project
Spain defender Laia Codina reveals that the main reason for joining West Ham was coach Rita Guarino's honesty and the club's ambition to improve.
Spain international defender Laia Codina, who recently joined West Ham United Women, has explained that her decision was influenced by many factors, but the biggest was Italian boss Rita Guarino, who took over in December. Speaking to BBC Sport, Codina said her first conversation with Guarino left a strong impression. "She was honest with me about everything – what she wants from me and what she wants from the team. That was probably the main reason."
West Ham have struggled against relegation in the Women's Super League in recent years, finishing 10th last season. However, this summer the club has invested, signing Codina, forward Ebony Salmon from Aston Villa, and young talents Niamh Peacock and Sienna Wareing. Codina stressed that she has experience winning titles but wants to be part of a team's improvement project. "I can see the project at West Ham – how it looks and what they showed me. There's something really nice going on, and they want to improve; they want to grow. To feel a part of this as a player is a really nice feeling."
Guarino, who led Juventus to four consecutive Serie A titles, prioritized defensive stability last season. However, Codina expects a change in style. "Honestly, I think we're going to see a West Ham that the fans will be proud of. It will be a recognisable West Ham – a team that can play football and will try to have the ball as much as possible."
Codina feels at home in London, having moved to England in 2023 after nine years at Barcelona. She is already giving back to the community by helping West Ham's foundation work with children in east London. "Football gives me this opportunity, and I'm going to try to use it as good as possible. I tell the children that it's not only about winning," she said.
She noted that other Spain teammates like Alexia Putellas, Mapi Leon, and Ona Batlle have also moved to England. Codina looks forward to facing them and hopes to win another World Cup next year. Regarding Spain's football success, she said the secret is to make it simple.
