Kohtla-Järve Plans to Demolish Eight Abandoned Houses
With state support, the city of Kohtla-Järve intends to demolish eight abandoned buildings. Agreements have been reached with some owners, while others may face forced expropriation.

According to the city's financial manager Aivar Kamal, contracts regarding compensation have already been signed with some property owners. For those who cannot be contacted, the city will proceed with compulsory acquisition, authorized by the city council. Demolition is expected to begin in August or September.
In addition to compensation, the city is considering relocation options. Some residents may be offered replacement apartments in other buildings. This would be a new experience for the municipality.
There are no specific plans for development of the cleared sites yet. In the future, playgrounds or recreation areas could be established, but construction in the coming years is unlikely.
