DRC's Tshisekedi Calls for National Dialogue, Excludes M23 Rebels
Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi has called for a national dialogue to reduce tensions but ruled out participation by M23 rebels, as the government moves to suspend 11 universities in rebel-held areas.
President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo has called for a national dialogue aimed at easing tensions within the country. He made clear, however, that the M23 rebel group, which controls parts of the country's east, will not be permitted to take part in the talks.
At the same time, the Congolese government is preparing to suspend operations at 11 public universities located in areas under rebel control.
Deadly mining accident in Ghana
In Ghana, at least 23 people, including 11 children, have died after falling into abandoned illegal gold-mining pits. The tragedy comes as the country experiences an unprecedented surge in so-called galamsey, or illegal small-scale gold mining, operations.
Uncertainty for deportees in Cameroon
Meanwhile in Cameroon, people deported there by the United States are living in uncertainty and fear persecution while they wait for decisions on their asylum claims. Their situation stems from controversial agreements Washington has struck with at least 30 countries, under which those nations agree to accept individuals the US cannot legally deport directly to their home countries.
