Competition for Vocational Schools Is as Fierce as for High Schools
Seven applicants per spot – such high competition is seen this year in some vocational programs, showing growing interest in technical education.
This week, Latvian vocational schools (tehnikumi) continue admitting 10th graders and signing contracts. In some programs, competition reaches seven applicants per place, meaning the fight for a spot in vocational education is just as intense as in general secondary schools.
State gymnasiums have nearly filled their 10th grades, while most Riga high schools have completed admissions. Consequently, about 500 young people who have not yet received an invitation must choose available spots in schools without entrance competition.
Education experts note that demand for vocational programs is rising, as more young people recognize the importance of practical skills in the labor market. Sometimes competition for a specific specialty in a vocational school is even higher than for a high school, reflecting shifting priorities in educational choices.
