Community Hiking in Slovakia’s High Tatras: Forging Bonds on the Trail
Guided group hikes are booming as people seek connection with nature and each other. A four-day expedition in Slovakia’s High Tatras brought together 11 strangers who conquered a 2,367-metre peak and left as friends.
A group of 11 strangers, having met just 24 hours earlier at London Luton Airport, stood atop Kôprovský štít at 2,367 metres above sea level, exhausted but exhilarated. The eight-hour, 23-kilometre climb through the Vysoké Tatry range had been gruelling, but the shared effort forged genuine bonds.
Community hiking has surged in popularity in recent years, with numerous groups catering to different demographics. The trip was organised by hiked.up and Tatra Escapes. Matt, a co-founder, explains that participants range from super-fit to complete beginners, and most come alone. Many join for mental health reasons or simply to meet like-minded people outside traditional, alcohol-centred socialising.
The four-day trip cost £650 per person (£600 for a shared room), covering transfers from Košice Airport, three nights’ B&B at Ranč Podlesok Relax, and guide services. The route passed through Slovak Paradise National Park with its wooden ladders and steep staircases, then into the High Tatras, a compact but dramatic alpine arc straddling the Slovak-Polish border.
The hike wasn’t without hitches – a miscommunication left the group without lunch on a nine-hour day. Yet this trial brought them closer: water was shared, faster hikers waited for the blister-stricken, and emergency supplies were given freely. “I’ve got fig rolls!” shouted one joyful hiker, sparking cheers.
Louis, a 24-year-old physiotherapist, believes such hikes tap into something primal. “Humans are designed to connect outdoors,” he says. Emma, a 32-year-old teacher, sees them as an antidote to urban loneliness – a way to connect more consciously. The author admits initial awkwardness, but by the end, the group shared comfortable silences at a mountain hut over beers, bonded by the shared adventure and the stunning scenery of ice-streaked slopes and glassy lakes.
