Coventry complete permanent deal for goalkeeper Rushworth
Coventry have turned Carl Rushworth's loan into a permanent move, reportedly for a club-record fee, after the goalkeeper helped them win the Championship and reach the Premier League.
Coventry City have completed a permanent transfer for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, 25, from Brighton & Hove Albion, following a loan spell at the CBS Arena. The fee is reported to be around £22m, which would be a club record, though neither side has confirmed the amount. The duration of what has been described as a 'long-term contract' also remains undisclosed.
Rushworth featured in all 46 of Coventry's league matches last season and kept 17 clean sheets as the club won the Championship, ending a 25-year wait to return to the Premier League.
The goalkeeper said he felt delighted and was experiencing a mix of emotions, including excitement and relief that the deal was complete, adding that he was back with the boys at a club he loved.
Rushworth never made a senior appearance for Brighton. Since joining from his hometown club Halifax Town in 2019, he had spent seven years out on six different loans.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard welcomed the move, saying it was great to have Rushworth back on a permanent basis. He described him as a top professional and a great character who had a huge impact in helping the team secure promotion last season.
