The Lääne Prefecture press service has reported that a man from Pärnu County was defrauded of €82,524 by scammers who used a fabricated story about a registered letter from court.

The fraudsters called the victim, claiming that a registered letter from the Tartu County Court had arrived for his company. To receive it, the man was told he needed to verify his identity using his PIN1 code. Subsequently, another scammer called, posing as a Smart-ID employee, stating that someone had attempted to create a new Smart-ID in the man's name but had been stopped, and the matter had been reported to the police.

A fake police officer then contacted the man via video call, claiming he was a victim of fraud and needed to fill out a statement. Following that, a bogus cybersecurity specialist instructed the victim to share his screen to check which websites had used his data.

The scammers called the man over several days, forcing him to perform and confirm various actions. These actions led to a total loss of €82,524.
