Scammers swindle €35,000 from Tartu County resident

A 52-year-old resident of Tartu County lost €35,000 after scammers posing as courier, Smart-ID, police and cyber police coerced him into installing remote access software.

A 52-year-old man from Tartu County has become the latest victim of fraud, losing tens of thousands of euros. According to a police report filed on July 23, unknown individuals contacted him by phone and WhatsApp.

The scammers first posed as courier company employees, claiming there was a letter from Tartu Court. They then called as supposed representatives of Smart-ID, the police, and cyber police, asserting that his bank account was at risk and he urgently needed to enter PIN codes.

Under pressure, the victim installed the AnyDesk program on his computer and granted the scammers remote access. He later discovered that €35,000 had been withdrawn from his personal and business accounts.

Police data shows that in the first five months of 2026, the average daily loss from scams was approximately €85,000.
