Scammers continue sending fake emails and texts posing as Latvia's road traffic authority CSDD

CSDD is warning the public about fraudulent emails and text messages sent in its name, urging people to carefully check any links before clicking. The warning follows a major cyberattack on the agency earlier this month.

Latvia's Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) has warned that scammers continue attempting to steal money and personal data by sending fake emails and text messages under the agency's name. CSDD stated that it did not send a particular notice currently circulating on social media.

The agency urges anyone who receives an email containing a link to carefully verify that it actually leads to the genuine address "e.csdd.lv" before opening it or entering any personal information. Information about traffic fines can be safely checked through the CSDD mobile app, the e-CSDD portal, or by typing "https://e.csdd.lv" directly into a browser.

Linked to recent cyberattack

The warning comes after CSDD suffered a cyberattack on the night of August 8, in which perpetrators obtained personal data belonging to roughly 1.2 million individuals and around 200,000 legal entities. The data was drawn from payments made to the directorate over the past 18 years, raising concerns that it could be used for targeted fraud.

In connection with the incident, both CSDD's supervisory council and its board announced their resignation on Wednesday, August 19. Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has ordered an expedited internal investigation to determine the full circumstances and those responsible, including a review of CSDD's cybersecurity contract with the company Tet. President Edgars Rinkēvičs has written to the Prosecutor General requesting a review of CSDD officials' actions regarding data security.

CSDD is a state-owned joint-stock company responsible for vehicle registration, issuing driving licenses, and conducting technical vehicle inspections in Latvia. Its shares are held by the Ministry of Transport.
