The town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, usually known for its Victorian cliff lift, has become the center of a cheating controversy dubbed 'Clickgate'. During a match between Saltburn second XI and Norton second XI, a fielder named Brian Devine was filmed clicking his fingers loudly as the batsman swung, apparently trying to deceive the umpire into believing the ball had edged the bat. The batsman was given out, and the video spread rapidly on social media, amassing over 7 million views.
The incident drew comparisons to the Argentina football team, with one Facebook user joking that Saltburn are the 'Argentina of local cricket'. Devine earned the nickname 'Clicky Ponting', a pun on former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Neither Saltburn nor Norton have commented, but the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League is investigating.
Local reactions ranged from laughter to condemnation. Retired teacher Pete Welsh said it was 'not very gentleman-like', while Bill Peters, a retired steelworker from Middlesbrough, noted that in St Lucia such cheating would have led to a fight. Neal Toulson, a former cricket club chair, called the allegations a reflection of a wider malaise in the sport, involving gamesmanship and sledging.
Shane Rowley, a player from Shildon Railway, claimed he was a victim of similar clicking in a previous match where the wicketkeeper made eight catches. After the Clickgate footage emerged, he apologized to umpires for earlier complaints. The fielder, identified as a 38-year-old company secretary, has reportedly lost sponsorship from a local Indian restaurant, and unconfirmed reports suggest he has been suspended by his club. Devine did not respond to requests for comment.
Toulson emphasized that cheating is serious and should result in a ban if proven. The story has brought both humor and scrutiny to the small town, but for many in the cricket community, the issue is no laughing matter.
