Possible airspace threat over Kraslava region ends

Latvia's National Armed Forces have announced that the yellow warning about a possible threat to Latvian airspace, issued to residents of the Kraslava region, has ended. A cell broadcast message confirming the resolution was sent to local residents.

The original alert was issued Monday evening, when NATO fighter jets were activated due to a possible threat to Latvian airspace. Residents of the Kraslava region received the warning, but no further action ultimately proved necessary. The yellow airspace warning remained in effect for just under two hours.

A recurring pattern in the region

Over recent months, residents of the Latgale and Vidzeme regions have repeatedly received similar cell broadcast warnings about possible airspace threats. In some cases, drones have actually crashed and exploded on Latvian territory, while on other occasions NATO member states' fighter jets have shot such drones down.

All of the airspace incidents to date are believed to be linked to drones involved in the Russia-Ukraine war approaching or entering Latvian airspace.
