Warning issued over possible airspace threat in Krāslava municipality

Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS) issued a warning on its social media accounts late Sunday evening, September 21, around 10:16 p.m., about a possible threat to airspace in Krāslava municipality.

The message, headlined "Be ready!", informed the public that a possible threat to Latvia's airspace exists, but that no additional action is required from residents at this time. The NBS stated that if the situation changes, people will receive a cell broadcast alert with instructions on what to do.

NATO jets scrambled

In response to the possible threat, NATO fighter jets have been scrambled into the air. The NATO Baltic air policing mission has been activated to monitor the regional airspace situation.

The NBS also published the notice on the platform X, stressing that residents should currently continue their normal activities while following official updates.

The latest warning comes amid a series of recent alerts across the Baltic states and wider Europe regarding possible threats from Russia. Officials elsewhere in Europe have also recently voiced concern about possible Russian action against NATO member states, although Baltic intelligence services have urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic.

It is not yet known what exactly triggered the alert over Krāslava municipality's airspace. The NBS has promised to inform the public if the situation changes and specific action from residents becomes necessary.
