Possible airspace threat declared in Krāslava municipality

A possible airspace threat was declared on Sunday in Krāslava municipality, the National Armed Forces (NBS) reported.
Residents of the municipality received a cell broadcast alert message warning them of the situation. The cell broadcast system is used to quickly reach mobile phones of people in a specific area with important safety information.
NATO fighter jets activated
In connection with the possible threat, fighter jets from NATO's Baltic air policing mission have been activated. This mission provides air defense for the Baltic states, as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia do not have their own combat aircraft capable of fully patrolling and protecting their airspace.
The NBS has not yet provided further details about the nature of the threat or the specific circumstances that prompted the alert in Krāslava municipality, which is located in eastern Latvia near the border with Belarus.
