Over the past weekend, two people suspected of transporting illegal migrants were detained in the Krāslava region of Latvia. The detentions were carried out by State Border Guard officers working together with soldiers from the National Armed Forces.

The State Border Guard announced the detentions, though further details about the circumstances, the number of migrants allegedly being transported, or any subsequent legal proceedings have not yet been made public.

Cooperation between border guards and the military

The Krāslava region lies along Latvia's eastern border, an area that has seen heightened attention in recent years due to attempts at illegal border crossings. The joint operation between border guards and National Armed Forces personnel in this area points to a continued heightened security regime along the border.

The State Border Guard has not yet provided additional comments on the exact circumstances of the detentions or on whether those detained are Latvian or foreign nationals.
