Kremlin plans 2027 meeting with Germany's AfD to discuss resuming gas supplies

Russia continues to maintain ties with far-right forces in Europe, even as Moscow officially justifies its war in Ukraine as a fight against nationalism. This contradiction has resurfaced in connection with new plans involving Kirill Dmitriev, a trusted representative of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Dmitriev has so far failed to persuade the United States to back construction of a tunnel under the Bering Strait, along with other grandiosely described multi-billion-dollar projects he has promoted. Now he is turning his attention to a different goal — restoring Russian gas supplies to Europe.

Planned meeting with AfD

For this purpose, Dmitriev has scheduled a meeting in March 2027 with leaders of Germany's far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD). Two people well informed about these plans told the news agency Reuters about the arrangement.

The Latvian news outlet TVNET, citing information obtained by Reuters, notes that Russia continues to seek allies within Europe's political landscape even after three years of war in Ukraine, apparently seeking to rebuild economic ties with Germany through political forces that have traditionally been more critical of Western sanctions and support for Ukraine.
