Russia has damaged over 500 Ukrainian locomotives as railway attacks reach Polish border

Ukraine's railway sector is facing mounting losses from Russian attacks, prompting the country to urgently request replacement locomotives from international partners. Since the start of the war, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged, but what stands out is that more than half of all wartime losses to the fleet happened this year alone.
Strikes extending toward the Polish border
The pattern of attacks shows that strikes on railway infrastructure are no longer confined to areas near the front line or the eastern and southern regions of the country — they have now reached areas close to the Polish border. This points to a westward expansion of the geographic scope of the attacks, bringing them closer to NATO territory.
Urgent appeal to allies
Railways remain one of Ukraine's most critical pieces of infrastructure during the war, meaning the rapid depletion of the locomotive fleet poses a direct threat to the country's transport capacity. As a result, Ukrainian officials are appealing to foreign partners to supply new locomotives as quickly as possible to offset the losses.
It is not yet known how many locomotives partners have pledged to provide or what the exact scale of the planned assistance will be. What is clear is that the pace of losses has accelerated sharply this year compared to previous years of the war, suggesting an intensified Russian focus on destroying Ukraine's rail infrastructure.
