Russia launches over 1,500 drones in four days, 800 of them jet-powered

Russia steps up use of jet-powered drones

Over the past four days, Russia has launched more than 1,500 drones against Ukraine. Of that total, roughly 800 have been jet-powered, meaning they are propelled by jet engines rather than the traditional propeller-driven design.

Such a high share of jet-powered drones suggests Russia is increasingly relying on this type of weapon in its strikes on Ukrainian territory. Jet-powered drones are generally capable of flying significantly faster than the conventional propeller-driven drones that have traditionally been used in mass attacks.

This increase in speed poses a serious challenge for Ukraine's air defense. Current air defense systems and interceptors, designed to catch slower drones, are unable to effectively deal with the faster jet-powered models. As a result, a portion of the launched drones can reach their targets much more easily, bypassing existing air defense systems.

The total number of drones launched over four days — more than 1,500 — is itself an indicator of a significant scale of attack. If roughly half of them are jet-powered drones that Ukraine's current resources cannot reliably intercept, this could signal a meaningful shift in the tactics and technology being used on the battlefield.

The situation highlights the need for Ukraine and its allies to adapt and modernize air defense systems so they can effectively respond to the latest drone technology being used in attacks.
