Russia strikes Kyiv in daylight as Zelenskyy urges UN to keep squeezing Russian revenues
Russian drone attacks on Kyiv killed two people and wounded 41 on Wednesday, as Zelenskyy told the UN General Assembly that world leaders must keep restricting Russia's war revenues. Strikes on Ukraine continued overnight and into Thursday morning.
Russia launched a daylight drone assault on Kyiv on Wednesday, just hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed world leaders at the UN General Assembly. Two people were killed and 41 injured in the capital, with black smoke rising over the city in what has become a near-daily pattern of strikes targeting Ukrainian civilians.
Authorities said the drones sparked fires and damaged buildings overnight in Kyiv and elsewhere in the country. The assault carried on into Thursday morning, prompting emergency crews to be sent to three districts, according to Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, who warned residents of ballistic missile strikes and urged them to stay in shelters.
Separately, a Russian aerial bomb attack killed five people and injured six in the village of Oleksandrivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, near Kramatorsk, regional governor Vadym Filashkin said, adding that Russian forces had dropped four bombs on the settlement.
Zelenskyy calls for sustained pressure
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Zelenskyy urged world leaders to keep restricting Russia's revenues, arguing that trade with Moscow only prolongs the war. He repeated his warning that Ukraine would retaliate to make winter painful for Russia if the two sides fail to reach a truce over energy infrastructure attacks before cold weather sets in.
Meanwhile, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to a G20 meeting in Miami in December, where a summit with Donald Trump could take place. The Kremlin said it would consider the invitation.
Zelenskyy also signed a drone cooperation agreement with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during meetings in New York that also included Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Additionally, Ukraine transferred two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea, Zelenskyy said. North Korea is estimated to have sent up to 15,000 troops to support Russia's war effort since 2024.
Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese, during an emotional meeting with Zelenskyy in New York, announced an additional $60m in support for Ukraine.
