Russia readying massive strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities, defense ministry says

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has said Russia is preparing massive strikes against the country's energy facilities, adding that Moscow has already carried out coordinated attacks on an industrial site in Kyiv.

Deadly strike near Kyiv

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X on Sunday that a Russian attack on Friday against a warehouse in Myla, near the Ukrainian capital, killed 38 people. Another 20 were injured and four remain missing. Fires caused by the strike damaged at least 50 residential homes.

Zelenskyy said that over the past week alone, Russia had launched nearly 2,000 strike drones, more than 1,600 aerial bombs and 31 missiles of various types against Ukraine.

Possible new ground offensive

Ukrainian officials say intelligence suggests Russia is planning a new ground assault on Kyiv. Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, told reporters that Russia's political leadership has tasked military commanders with planning and preparing attacks on both Kyiv and the city of Chernihiv.

Western response

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Saturday that NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had shared his assessment of the situation in the region and along the Ukrainian-Russian front, noting that Russian escalation is continuing. Tusk called for greater air support for Ukraine.
