An avalanche broke loose from Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge, in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria region, around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, sweeping through a group of 33 climbers.

By Monday morning, September 7, authorities had confirmed 11 deaths and six injuries among the climbers. Ten members of the group managed to reach safety on their own, while a search for the remaining six missing climbers was still underway.

Difficult conditions for rescuers

According to Russia's state news agency TASS, citing the regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry, 56 people are taking part in the search-and-rescue operation. The agency noted that the terrain in the area is difficult and that the danger of additional avalanches remains, complicating rescue efforts.
